It is also known as the “Devil Rider’s” castle, named after Count Móric Sándor. “He is no man; he is a devil,” people in England said of him. Budapest and Vienna buzzed with stories of his hair-raising equestrian feats. He set several world records in show jumping. He even jumped his horse off the balcony of his own castle, and legend has it that he often rode his horse inside the castle as well.

Sightseeing in Zsámbék (Ruined Church, Lamp Museum, Local History House)

Number of participants Price
more than 10 people €16/person

One of the finest monuments of medieval Hungarian architecture is the ruin of a monastery church built in the first half of the 13th century; it reflects French influences and displays characteristics of both the Late Romanesque and Early Gothic styles. Artistic carvings featuring plant motifs can still be seen on several column capitals. It is worth ascending to the top of the Lapidarium for the view of the surrounding hills and excellent photo opportunities.

Currently, the country's only Lamp Museum houses between 1,000 and 1,100 lighting artifacts. The institution was entered into the Guinness Book of Records in 1995, admitted to the International Lamp Club in America in 1980, and became a member of the Australian Museums Association in 1983.

Zsámbék’s oldest residential building takes its name from the relief visible on its façade. The local heritage house opened in 1993 through a grassroots initiative. The local history exhibition includes a “best room” (traditionally the most formal room in the house), a kitchen with an open chimney, and a thematic exhibition titled Wardrobe Tales, which opened on October 11, 2020.

This beautiful farmstead is located on the main street of Budajenő—in the old village—and features a press house and cellar that are over a century old. Inherited from their ancestors, the property is carefully preserved by the family so that future generations—their children and grandchildren—can also craft wine here. In the meantime, this is where they ferment, age, and rack their wines, and where they gather to play cards, enjoy a fröccs (wine spritzer), and chat—while also happily showing the place to any curious wine lover who stops by.
